The 14th installment in the David Fears Dark Series featuring hard-boiled PI Mike Angel originates again in Portland. Our intrepid PI has jumped over the hill and is now coming to terms with the idea of being 41 and a father for the first time.The decision to become a fix and flip type of homeowner sets Mike off on another mad dash that typify his cases after a corpse appears in the wall of his first project. While on his way hopping across state lines he works once more with earthily sexy FBI agent Cass from Montana as they attempt to unravel the ensuing mystery.
This real life mystery spent a lot of time above the fold on page 1 in numerous U.S. newspapers. The DB Cooper hijacking case was never solved satisfactorily. Will Mike find the mystery man that eluded J Edgar and boys or just end up chasing his tail, along with the tails attached to another collection of hotties that cross his path?
This latest entry in the Dark series pulls you along to a nice little twist of a climax as Mike nabs a pedophile, stumbles across another murder, and gets into another shootout. Of course he manages to find himself trying to decide if it’s worth falling for the charms of another damsel in distress.
All the entries in this Spillanesque series have a real-life historical tie-in and could be read as standalone novels as they all contain just enough back story to fill in any blanks. The dialogue has a nice pop as the banter between the main players brings them right off the page and into the room with you. After a while you feel like you know them.
This series is not for the faint hearted as they all contain enough sex, violence and the lingo of the times that they occur in, which to me adds a strong dose of realism. Enjoy.
