Lawyer David Sloane is a desperate parent. His son Jake, still reeling from the loss of his mother in a brutal murder (Bodily Harm), has spiraled out of control. Sloane needs to reconnect with him - needs to keep him out of jail. So when an old friend suggests a guys-only camping trip, Sloane accepts. Maybe if he and Jake get away they will find needed quality time. Bond. Catch a few fish.
But the trip into the remote reaches of California's Gold Country takes a turn for the worse when Jake and his buddy are caught vandalizing a general store. Brought to trial in a kangaroo court, the presiding judge tries, convicts and sentences the boys to six months in the county-owned wilderness detention center. For the teen-aged boys, a grueling psychological and physical ordeal begins.
As Sloane fights the conviction, he stumbles into ever-more menacing territory. A clannish town, a judge whose authority seems to extend far beyond the confines of his courtroom, and the emerging story of a juvenile detention center from hell, where the glories of nature cover dark secrets. All standards of lawyerly conduct fail Sloane in Judge Earl Boykin's court. With his legal options exhausted, knowing the boys' lives are on the line, Sloane hatches a daring rescue operation that just might get them all killed.
For the lawyer who never loses, this time the only way to win is outside the law.

The Conviction David Sloane, Book 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Dugoni, Dan John Miller, Brilliance Audio Books Reviews
I bought this because I liked My Sister's Grave. This is one of a series of books featuring a lawyer named David Sloane. Dugoni's characters are adequately drawn, some better than others. Interestingly, Sloane is hardly filled in at all -- a hazard with a series novel. There are some clunky set-pieces and some of the set-up seems contrived and not real credible.
So why the four-star review? First of all, this is really a "3.5+." I hesitated to give this four stars, but in the end I need to be honest I had real trouble putting this book down. The plot is fantastic -- in both senses of the word. Yet Dugoni does a marvelous job selling it. The pacing is perfect, and the events race toward a convergence with a real hint of menace and great dramatic flair. The quality of the writing itself is good enough, though not great. But this is a good story, and it's told very well.
I read about the first four chapters of this book and quit. Just cannot buy into the premise or circumstances. It is probably based on some real-life situation, but it's just hard for me to spend my leisure time reading or watching stupid people. It's like reality TV in a book. No thanks. I have read three other novels by this author and really enjoyed them, but this one, for me anyway, is a stinker. Yes, teenagers do stupid things and there are some people who abuse the justice system. The combination can be completely ridiculous. If I want to expose myself to it, I can just watch the TV news! Pass on this one!
I went and got this second book from Dugoni, after I read My Sister's Grave. I actually enjoyed this book more than that one even though it was pretty good. Dugoni has a very crisp writing style which goes well with legal thrillers. In this book, his protagonist, David Sloane, is not involved in court. His 16-year stepson is acting out due to his mother's murder, so Sloane decides to take him on a Father-son camping outing with friends. They pick the wrong town to stop in before going to the woods. The son Jake, decides to pull a criminal stunt with the younger boy he is with, and gets them both arrested. This puts them into a system, where the judge quickly puts them into a rehabilitative program for boys, without providing them with lawyers or even a chance to talk to their parents/guardians. The program turns out to be less than rehabilitative, and more a place where boys are abused and used as slave labor. Sloane and his friend, whose son was also convicted in a illegal court situation, are determined to help their boys get out of this place at any means necessary. And since the court and the police are equally determined to retain these boys, this means Sloane must work undercover to prove the authorities in this town are up to no good.
Many people will pass this story off as 'fiction', but unfortunately, this did happen in Eastern PA, where judges and lawyers conspired to put both young boys and girls into a private detention facility for kickbacks. These guys were caught and put behind bars for over 20 years, but not until they ruined the lives of many children and teenagers. So in this case, reality became fiction. I'm sure it isn't the first time something like this has happened in the U.S. But I can understand how frightened parents must be for their children when trapped in a situation like, let alone how the kids feel.
If you enjoy thrillers, this is definitely a great book. The plot is excellent, and Dugoni does a better job in characterization than many of authors do who write books like this. The characters are more believable and three dimensional, than in many mysteries.
This was one of those "Well, I'm already into it so I have to get these people out of trouble by finishing it" books. It must be an early Dugoni. His others are far superior. I found most of it implausible. Such a prison for boys couldn't have remained under the radar today. And a street smart kid like Jake would have recognized right away what was being grown there. And undercover agents couldn't or wouldn't have done nothing while kids were tortured. I could list a dozen more implausibles but why tell the story. Try a different Dugoni.
WOW....WHAT A GREAT BOOK AND GREAT STORY.....I AM HOOKED AND HAVE ALREADY ORDERED MORE OF HIS BOOKS....HE KEEPS THE STORY GOING AT A GOOD PACE WITH NO WASTED STORY TELLING ABOUT THE WEATHER AND OTHER DUMB STUFF, HE KEEPS YOU WONDERING WHATS NEXT...VERY HARD TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THIS BOOK....LOVE IT AND LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE I HAVE ALREADY ORDERED.....
There is no way, absolutely no way, I could have figured out the twists and turns in this plot. It wasn't for lack of trying, on my part.
Just fantastic. I loved that I couldn't. Usually, I can.
I'm smiling, even now, when I think back to certain parts of the story, where I stopped; I went back a couple or three chapters, and hoped something there would give me a clue, as to what had just happened. But... No. Lol
Tricky, Mr Dugoni, very tricky.
So, I continued reading.
There was a point, probably 3/4 through, when I finally decided to stop trying.
Then, I just read... And read. And was amazed, at the intricacy of the plot, the details, the depth of the characters, the smoothness of the writing and sadly, the inevitable ending, that I knew, was fast approaching.
No one. No one... Wants an excellent book to end.
And this, unarguably, is an excellent book.
